Large diameter Al wire bonding is used primarily in power devices and hybrids that require more than several amperes per wire, such as automotive power modules.

Large Al wires are bonded by ultrasonic welding method, using 60 or 80 KHz power supplies.

Large wire is usually considered to range from about 75 or 100 um to over 500 um in diameter (3-20 mils).

The current large-wire technology includes both manual and auto-bonders, using Heavy Wire Wedges.

Advanced precision Electro-Discharge Machining (EDM) processes using high quality Tungsten Carbide, ensure that the wedges are manufactured with high dimension repeatability as well as consistency. MPP developed this process to meet current as well as future industry standards.
